The Center for Fiction
Registration includes a complimentary drink from our Café & Bar.
We will gather to discuss Virginia Woolf’s 1919 short story “Kew Gardens,” a modernist masterpiece and key example of early stream-of-consciousness writing, and an important early publication from Woolf & Leonard Woolf’s Hogarth Press. In this glorious garden story, humans share the spotlight with flowers and insects.
What to read in advance of the first meeting: “Kew Gardens” in its entirety.
What to expect from this reading group: We will start with some background on Woolf, the time of the story, and then open up for a wide-ranging discussion on character, theme, style, and more.
Reading List: A link to the story will be emailed upon registration.
Upcoming Programming: Join Fernald and fellow author and professor Urmila Seshagiri at The Center’s event on October 16th to celebrate the release of The Life of Violet, the highly anticipated collection of experimental fiction by Virginia Woolf, edited by Seshagiri. Then, spend more time with Woolf’s work in Fernald’s yearlong reading and discussion group, starting on October 21st.
