If you have a novel in you but struggle to find the time to write it (and who doesn’t?) this course is for you. The ideal circumstances for writing a novel—unlimited time and resources—don’t exist for almost anyone, so how do we make space for such a marathon project?

Together, we’ll spend an hour each week getting the ball rolling on our books by setting goals, discussing craft and process, taking inspiration from great novelists, brainstorming, troubleshooting, and of course, drafting. We’ll use prompts to generate ideas and fuel our work, though this is not a workshop—the goal here is to help you make as much progress on your novels as possible. Led by a novelist who has stolen time to write amid multiple gigs and parenting responsibilities, this class will embolden you to make the most of the limited time you have.

Course Outline:

  • Week 1: Getting the Ball Rolling
  • Week 2: First Chapters
  • Week 3: Characters
  • Week 4: Novel Architecture
  • Week 5: Worldbuilding
  • Week 6: Pacing
  • Week 7: Theme
  • Week 8: Perseverance

Teaching Style: I like to foster lively discussion through open-ended questions, readings, and writing prompts, with the goal of instilling confidence in writers and helping them bring their ideas into focus.

Level: Intermediate

This course will be held online via Zoom.
