This class will combine a rigorous and intimate workshop experience, generative writing prompts tailored to your individual project, close reading of short stories and novel excerpts by masters of the craft, as well as advice about the best writing habits and routines to support a long-term project. Students can expect to come away with a deeper understanding of novel writing and the craft of fiction, and the tools to revise their novels-in-progress.
Course Outline:
- Each participant will have the opportunity to receive robust and detailed feedback on at least 25 pages of their novel-in-progress over the course of the semester. This includes extensive line edits as well as a two-page feedback letter.
- Each participant will also have the opportunity for a 20-minute live-edit; a close-reading, and revision of a passage of their work on the sentence level, a 30-minute one-on-one meeting with the instructor, and a personalized revision plan from the instructor, including reading suggestions, tips, and ideas for revising your work.
- Craft classes will include extensive handouts prepared by the instructor about the weekly topic, including plot, structure, character, narrative time, setting, objects in fiction, and more.
- Tailored writing prompts that will help you get unstuck and fuel your writing and playful creation.
- Experimental writing prompts that tap into what we can learn from other art forms, including paintings and sculptures, music, dance, and film.
- A special class on revision comparing different versions of work by writers such as Carver, Nabokov, and Joyce.
