The Center for Fiction Presents Jess Walter on So Far Gone with Amor Towles

The Center for Fiction welcomed back Jess Walter, author of the bestselling novel Beautiful Ruins, to celebrate the release of his new book, So Far Gone. Amor Towles, author of A Gentleman in Moscow, joined Walter in conversation.

So Far Gone tells the story of a reclusive journalist who reemerges to rescue his missing daughter and grandchildren from a dangerous militia fueled by conspiracy theorists. A sharp, energetic adventure in the spirit of Charles Portis’s True Grit, Walter’s latest offers a keen perspective on family and culture in modern America.

    Jess Walter

    Jess Walter is the author of seven previous novels, including the bestsellers The Cold Millions and Beautiful Ruins, the National Book Award Finalist The Zero, and Citizen Vince, winner of the Edgar Award for best novel. His short fiction, collected in The Angel of Rome and We Live in Water, has won the O. Henry Prize, the Pushcart Prize and appeared three times in Best American Short Stories. He lives in his hometown of Spokane, Washington.

A Gentleman in Moscow (2016) was on the New York Times bestseller list for two years and was named one of the best books of 2016 by the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the San Francisco Chronicle, and NPR. In 2024, Paramount+ released a mini series based on the novel which stars Ewan McGregor. The Lincoln Highway (2021) debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. The book is being adapted as a feature film by Warner Brothers with Chris Storer, the creator of “The Bear,” writing and directing. Table for Two (2024), a collection of six short stories and the novella “Eve in Hollywood,” was a New York Times bestseller. Towles’s short stories have appeared in the Paris Review (#112), Granta (#148), British Vogue, and Audible Originals.
