“That Evening Sun,” one of William Faulkner’s greatest stories, pursues issues of race, violence, family life (from the perspectives of children and parents), the roles of women and men, the U.S. South, and modern life. A sense of dread pervades the tale, which depicts a changing South reckoning with old habits and fears, and children caught up in the family dynamics that harm the lives of White and Black people alike. Reflecting a certain period in Faulkner’s life and American history, this story will be explored through discussions of Faulkner’s themes and his life.
